Clovis Christmas Tree Lane

The Clovis version of Christmas Tree Lane is located in the Wawona Estates neighborhood, located between Willow & Peach and Alluvial & Nees (about six blocks), is the new place to go for twinkling lights and lawn decor. You don't have the charm of the older houses that the Fig Garden, Fresno, Christmas Tree lane has, but you may drive or walk any night from 6-10pm.

Etsy Giveaways

One of my favorite sites is Etsy. I have a couple friends that sell products on Etsy and I just love the idea all together. Etsy is a way of selling handmade items online as a community. It is part of a rebirth of the cottage industry in my opinion. Check out these Etsy giveaways on their giveaway blog. What a great way to promote your products.

A Season of Giveaways!

Many Frugal Blogs are gathering together and have excellent giveaways! Now, make sure to follow the rules. In order to enter each giveaway make sure you post on the blog itself, not on facebook or twitter. You comment right below the giveaway. You can enter on each blog even if they are giving away the same item. Just keep track of where you have entered so you don't get mixed up. I suggest you start with one blog and enter all giveaways for that blog, then move on to the next. SO you have 12 blogs giving away 12 items each. Remember blogs and local contests really are the best odds for winning.  I'll post about other blogsters events soon. Good Luck!

Rent your Textbooks!

Check out DealOz.com which is like a airfare comparison site except for textbooks etc. It compares prices to rent, buy used, and buy new. Valley Cooling Centers: Find Relief from the Heat

You or those you know may be sensitive to heat and this hot, hot weather is too much. The city of Fresno provides cooling centers to provide relief. This is especially important for the elderly in the valley.

Fresno.gov posted this a couple days ago,
"The forecast of high heat over the next few days has triggered activation of City of Fresno Cooling Centers today and tomorrow. Residents may visit Mosqueda Community Center, Pinedale Community Center, Ted C. Wills Community Center and the Frank H. Ball Neighborhood Center for heat relief from noon until 8pm. The City will provide free bus transportation along normal routes to and from the cooling centers for residents requesting a ride. While activation does call for free swimming while pools are operational, the City of Fresno pools closed for the season when FUSD began its 2010-2011 school year."

You can call the city on days under 105 degrees to check if the cooling centers are running. 621-CITY

For those who simply can't afford to pay their skyrocketing PG&E bills. The Fresno EOC program provides Home Energy Assistance/Emergency Crisis Program for those who qualify to help them pay their PG&E bill. This assistance is up to $390. It takes 10-14 days to know if you are approved at 6-8 weeks before they pay for your bill directly to PG&E. So, apply early if you foresee not being able to pay your bill in the future. If you do have a 48 hour notice, they should be able to help more quickly. For more information click HERE or call 559-263-1135.

Unlike Swirl this site offers a variety of products including maternity, toys, furniture, etc. it just depends on the day.
Shipping with Zulily is flat rate $5.95.

She Saved
has posted a couple coupon codes, BTSBLOG10 will get you $10 off a $30 order and Coupongeek found GAF7856 which takes $5 off an order of $50.

This is nice because then you enter your information when you sign up, then click "register" at the bottom of the page for each contest. You don't have to retype everything again and again. Amazon Deal Still On!

So I just have to mention this again. If you don't already have an Amazon account-get one. You can use the Subscribe and Save feature for items other than diapers and such, they just happen to be the best deal right now.
You can repeatedly sign up for the Subscribe and Save feature with Free two day shipping and cancel at any time without repercussions. I am expecting a new baby any day now so I took the time to order size N, 1-2, and 2 diapers. I also bought Lasinoh disposable breastpads. I'm going bulk, because the 30% off with Subscribe and Save for diapers and wipes becomes 15% off like all the other Subscribe and Save items after 8/31/2010.

Some tips
:
Use the "Check out Your Coupons" feature once you've selected an item it will be further down the page. I used a Pampers coupon (once) for an extra 1.50 off in addition to the 30%

The Subscribe and Save discount applies to Amazon sales only.

Type in Subscribe and Save in the search bar if you don't see it at the top.

Amazon will show you different styles like Swaddlers or Baby Dry and there is a bar that says, More options available. Sometimes the sizes in the drop down are cheaper than the size shown. For instance: I was looking at the size 3 Pampers Baby Dry Pack for 27 cents a diaper, pulled out the more options, found that the size 1-2 pack was selling for 17 cents a diaper. After the 30% off, my diapers cost 11 cents a diaper.

If you receive Parents magazine, August offers an Amazon coupon for 20% off one order of Diapers. The codes are unique, but stack with Subscribe and Save.

My total for the size 1-2 Pampers diapers 192 count with the Subscribe and Save and Amazon coupon for diapers from Parents magazine was a total of $16.27 which is 9 cents a diaper!

Amazon also applied a Free Amazon Prime Membership preview to my account through November 3rd. So, if you're lucky, they'll do this for you to! This means I get free 2 day shipping and returns.

Don't forget with Swagbucks you could be earning $5 Amazon gift cards to go with your 15% off with Subscribe and Save after the August extra 15% off on diaper care items ends.

Picaboo Photobook $39 value for $8.99 Shipping!

This offer is for first time Picaboo customers only. Picaboo is a website dedicated only to quality photobooks. You can get a FREE classic photobook with the code FREEBK through August 31. Don't wait to the last minute though, making photobooks is always a time consuming process. You do need to download their software to being the process. The deal covers 20 pages; you can pay for additional pages if you wish. Shipping costs $8.99. Sounds like a good Christmas gift for the grandparents....
Thanks She Saved.

A Season of Yardsales

This post is dedicated to my sister Jen.

Summer is the season of yardsales. This is the community's opportunity to interact in a positive way and recycle/upcycle items. By participating in yardsales you save money, help others get rid of unwanted goods, and prevent waste (and lessen the impact on our landfills).

What are best items to get at yardsales? That's a matter of opinion. At this point in my life, clothing is my favorite. My mom, furniture probably. My sister loves getting books and large backyard toys for her kids. Furniture, electronics, antiques... it's up to you. Generally speaking yardsale prices are 10% of the original price. Obviously some items hold their value better than others and clothes are considerably less than 10%.

Now you might be thinking, I don't want to drive about aimlessly hoping I find a estate or yardsale with what I want.
You don't have to. Craigslist offers a garage sale section. You can read posts and plot your Saturday morning according to times, distance, and goods available. My sister went so far to plot each address on Google maps, planned her route, and printed it out. I generally pick a street, like Cedar, and drive north. It's up to you.
Since this weekend is the last before school starts, it's bound to be promising, so happy hunting!

Back to School Bonanza

My Frugal Adventures along with 11 other money saving bloggers are offering some nice giveaways for back-to-school (One is a $100 Carter's gift card). So if you have some time, enter to win by leaving comments on their posts and you can earn other entries by becoming a fan on facebook/twitter etc. Click HERE and MFA has links to all of the other blogs. You can enter the same contest on each blog, odds depend on the number of entries so 4/900 or so for giveaways is really not that bad. Most of these giveaways end this weekend! Good luck!

Shade Clothing Liquidation up to 75% off

It is always a sad day to see a favorite store close. Shade clothing, a clothing line made specifically for modest and stylish wear announced today that it will be liquidating its entire stock of clothing. Products will be up to 75% off. Currently the website is down, I assume for maintenance reasons. Their shirts are especially wonderful because they tend to be extra long making all the bending over and sitting on the ground that mommies do much more comfortable because we aren't exposing our skin. Hopefully they will reemerge sometime soon, they have quality products.

Amazon.com

So I feel like a late-comer to the wonderfulness of Amazon.com. I would say Amazon is what Ebay used to be. Also with the combination of Swagbucks.com you can earn through your internet search bar Swagbucks to buy Amazon gift cards at $5 a piece. These gift cards include shipping costs, do not expire, and stack. Granted it takes a while to earn 450 Swagbucks, but over time it's free credit for something you are already doing, searching the internet. Swagbucks offers other prizes and gift cards, but the Amazon gift cards are truly the best deal.

You might be asking, "What's with the potty?" I used a $5 gift card from Swagbucks to discount my purchase to Amazon.com for this potty chair for my daughter. I purchased it along with some qualifying panties in order to get the super-saver shipping for purchases over $25. Had I been patient I could have saved the $25 in Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks and purchased it for FREE. Sadly I didn't have the foresight and had already purchased two Baby Einstein videos for FREE with $10 worth of gift cards. Well I spent $4.05 including shipping for and $4.88 for including shipping. The remaining balance just sat in my Amazon account for later.

Check out the Subscribe and Save for ways to seriously save on many necessities that you can have delivered right to your door. I think this is Amazon's ways of competing with Alice.com, Diapers.com and Soap.com

Groupon.com

So, I'm sure you've seen the ad for Groupon on nearly every couponing/frugal living blog you've encountered. I was a little suspicious to tell you the truth, but since the majority of the deals are from local companies, I decided to give it a try and it worked! We bought three tickets to The Island Waterpark at half price ($13). They did have an expiration date, but it was at the end of the season (September) and all I had to do is print it out and bring the coupon to the company just like any other coupon. So I just wanted to inject some confidence into those of you that are wary when the deals seem too good to be true. If you aren't familiar with Groupon you create an account and the email you daily deals that last 24 hours. These deep discounts are available because they work as "group" sales and create customer acquisition for businesses. When you see an offer you want, you sign into your account and make your purchase within the 24 hours and if enough people join, you're set! They currently offer referral rewards, $10 credit a friend, if you like what you see, you can use my referral HERE

SideStep Best for Cheap Flights

Have you checked out SideStep? I don't travel often, but in the last ten years this is the best site I have found for finding the best price and times for flights. It also offers searches for car rentals, hotels etc. The reason I find this group search site more valuable than others, is because it shows you a chart of the flight prices over the last 90 days -and- it shows you the best prices that other people have found in the last 48 hours on a calendar or list view. So happy traveling!

Free Family Movies in Fresno

Regal Entertainment is offering free movies this summer for kids and parents. The movies are G-PG, and start on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am. Fresno's Edward's Theater is participating only with Manchester Stadium as well. To check each week online to see what is playing click HERE. This next week at Edward's and Manchester you can watch Clifford's Big Movie (G) or The Spy Next Door (PG).
I see this as a great opportunity, not only to enjoy the movies with the fam, but to test out your little ones attention span knowing that you can walk out in the middle of the movie if you need to without any buyers regret.

Fresno Parks and Recreation offers free movies in the park all summer. Every Friday night they show a free family film in Easton Plaza. Parking around the Eaton Plaza and Water Tower is free for the event. They provide a free bounce house to entertain the kids before the show starts. Food vendors are present for the event. Click HERE for more details.
Tonight Blind Side is playing, next week August 20th, 2010, GI Joe. Movies run through September 24th, 2010.

Free Water Play areas in Fresno

Fresno has two free water play parks in Fresno that are mainly for ages 2-8 years old. One is well known and located in Roeding Park, the other is located on Maple and Shepherd and has two jungle gym areas, one for ages 2-5 the other 5-10 I believe. I have also known parents to take their little ones to play in the fountain that squirts up from the ground in front of the main entrance of Fashion Fair mall. So, if you were looking for a way for your kiddos to cool off, without your sprinklers or a pool, check these places out.

Sounds like something you don't want to miss! Riverdale is located about 40 minutes south of Fresno. Take 41 South, past Caruthers. The freeway will become Camden St. Turn west of Whitney Ave and drive about 3 miles and you're there! The parade is held on the main road. For more information click HERE.

Pregnancy and Posting

I apologize for not posting the last month or so. I am expecting my third child and find that the demands of my family supersede that of the blog. I may be posting here and there it really depends on how I feel. Remember there are many lovely frugal blogs out there. I will try to bring up California's Central Valley events when I have the time. Lots of love, Sarah

New to Couponing?

For those who are interested in couponing or just starting out, My Frugal Adventures has started a beginners tutorial this week covering how to get the most out of shopping at stores like Walgreens and CVS. MFA is from California so most of the promotions and coupons in the newspapers etc. are the same. The Sassy Saver is a local (Fresno area) blogger who provides classes for free. The Sassy Saver also has a deal with the Fresno Bee that allows customers to receive the Sunday newspaper for about $28 a year which averages to 54 cents a Bee. If you save between 50 cents to $1.00 a week (and this is seriously shooting low once you start couponing- you'll see) then the investment will pay for itself over and over again. Mildred (559) 250-8247 or Sandy (559) 269-2798 for additional details and table rentals.

I'm a huge fan of garage and yard sales, especially those who benefit local organizations. It's a wonderful way to prevent waste and recycle items and clothing that may otherwise end up in a dumpster. As the weather warms up, so with the yard sales! Check Fresno's Craigslist and you can map out your Saturday hunt with Googlemaps before hand (and save time and gas)!

Fresno MultiFaith Exchange

The incredible diversity of Fresno is underestimated by many people who have grown up here. Because of the tendency of people to stick to their own patterns and friendships, we sometimes miss out on the social, cultural, and religious opportunities Fresno provides. It's natural to be drawn to people with similar beliefs, but often we learn the most about ourselves through interaction with others. We are social creatures.

Today I had the opportunity to learn about the Fresno MultiFaith Exchange from Cheryl Gardner, a member. This is not simply a non-denominational group, but a group of religious people representing world faiths and the many facets within religions. I don't know how to express what a valuable role this group must play within a community to bring together friendships and understanding between faiths that may not otherwise exist. Imagine what could be learned from a forum where you can openly go to the source, those who practice their faith.

If you are interested, meetings are held monthly.
The next meeting is

Fresno Connections

Take some time to go through the blog network and really look into what people are doing in Fresno. I don't have time to truly do anyone justice, but 31 Days of Fresno had a clever idea and it's worth seeing her month in Fresno and the insights she gained on her discoveries. "Also cool is Central Valley Moms. Part blog, part forum, part AWESOME, CV Moms is a way for moms in the valley to connect, share and get through this adventure called parenthood together." This quote is from day 26.

If you are 20 something and new to Fresno, check out Bored in Fresno. This Meet-Up group organizes activities for all Fresnans to get out and about and make new friends.

Click HERE to view the website of a local magazine called
Totts, Fresno's Lifestyle Magazine for Modern Moms.

With surprisingly little effort you can probably find a hobby group to meet your interests by searching Fresno blogs. Many of the best activities tend to be word of mouth in Fresno because it can be such a disjointed community. Google hobbies or activities with Fresno as a key word. Try it out. Hopefully you find people you connect with. I've found however, working through the blog network, through blogs that people follow or are connected to, is a more efficient way of finding related blogs.

For example, my husband and I were members of Central Valley Reefers, a group dedicated to nurturing healthy salt-water environments and fish tanks. We joined activities and swapped corals, and other aquatic life to help prevent the harvesting of ocean reefs. We even did a group trip to Monterrey Bay Aquarium a couple years ago and got a behind the scenes tour of some of the fish tanks.

Facebook and Myspace are also convenient ways to share and find out about activities from friends to keep in-the-know locally.

Strong Moms

I posted about a month ago about pregnancy and parenting websites. Here's one provided by Similac called StrongMoms.com. When you sign up, there is an option for a promo code. Type in PARENTS and you have a choice between 6 months FREE subscription to Parents magazine, or 6 months FREE and another year for $5. Pretty sweet deal. Other offers may vary, but coupons and samples are probably a guarantee. So check it out, click HERE to join.

If you are expecting, you can print out a certificate for a free Similac diaper bag that works like a sling backpack. Present this certificate when you are being discharged from the hospital and hopefully they are participants and you'll get your diaper bag with free goodies inside. Sierra Charter School

Sierra Charter School is a Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accredited school that offers a personalized independent study program for FREE. The school is public and K-12.
For information about the program in Fresno contact
490-4290 ext 0
or call toll free 877-490-4290

1931 N Fine, Fresno, CA. 93727 (Near Chestnut and McKinley)

"Sierra Charter School is dedicated to producing responsible, critical thinkers and lifleong learners with free public education that provides one-on-one attention with credentialed teachers and tutors. Sierra Charter School offers your child tutoring in math and reading along with homework support."

My girls are still too young to be attending school, but if anyone has experience with Sierra Charter School's program, I would be very interested to know. I think it might be a better resource for parents already or planning to home-school their children than the regular public school system since independent study is its main focus.

National Pancake Day

Mark it on your calendar, National Pancake Day is February 23rd and IHOP is offering a free short stack of pancakes to celebrate. Visit participating IHOP's between 7am and 10am for your silver dollars! Yum.

Taking a Break

This winter, I've chosen to focus a lot of time on my family, so I apologize that I haven't been very active. My posts will pick up again and hopefully, you're frugal talents are making you more money savvy than ever. The down side I've found, which may make some people think I'm obsessed, is that knowing the price per unit of certain items can drive me crazy, for instance, if I end up using a ton of wipes for something random, I think, that was just 10 cents a wipe! So you can get carried away, just remember to keep everything in balance.

Break the Barriers

I just wanted to take the time to say how much I appreciate the role that Break the Barriers Inc. plays in the Fresno area. It is an organization dedicated to providing an environment where each child, regardless of physical or mental challenges, can participate and perform in various activities including and foremost gymnastics, aquatics (including swim lessons), the Buddy Program, dance, day camps, health and fitness, martial arts, and sign language. They also provide free Wii fit and reading programs. Break the Barriers is a non-profit organization that provides affordable programs. (The most affordable that I know of in the Fresno area.)

For example for dance sessions once a week, 45 minutes long, lasting for 18 weeks, they charge $202.
Gymnastics sessions are one or two times a week, one hour sessions, on a monthly basis. They charge $45 per month for once and week, and $85 monthly for twice a week.

Another act of their love and support for the community involves the Secret Pocket Scholarship for needy families.

To contact Break the Barriers Inc. call 559-432-6292 or click HERE for their website and learn more about their organization.

BtheB is located on Cedar north of Teague.

January Sales

Watch for those semi-annual sales this month (Victoria's Secret especially). Department stores usually have fantastic sales, generally up to 75% off, during January because they dump all their left-over clothing from the year before. Sadly, without Mervyns and Gottshalks in Fresno anymore, this leaves JCPenney's and Macy's as the major department stores. Still, stores like Old Navy and Target have sales worth braving the cold to mosey through the isles. A couple years ago, I scored a cashmere sweater originally $60 for about $6 at Old Navy in Riverpark. Even though most of us are stretched pretty thin after Christmas, most of these clothing deals are too good to miss (including formal wear like men's suits, cocktail dresses, and bridal attire).
January and February are generally the worst months for retail, so look for those sales and take advantage of them!

Don't ignore the Holiday items for sale, they are usually 75% off as well.

IHOP Kids Eat Free

Receive one kids menu order free with each adult entree everyday from 4pm to 8pm at IHOP excluding drinks. The kids menu includes pancakes, french toast, cheese omelettes, chicken strips, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, eggs, macaroni and cheese, and fruit and seasoned fries as sides. This deal seems to vary based on location, however I think the Fresno/Clovis area should be good since I heard the deal on radio ad locally.

Clovis $3 Movie Theater

The United Artists Clovis Towne Center 8 located on Villa and Shaw has
$3 admission for all ages, at all times, everyday. The theater plays films that are out of the everyday theaters, but still within the last year.
I've heard the phrase many times from friends,
"We'll just wait until it comes out in the $3 theater."
This is especially good news for big families, finally everyone can go for a reasonable price.
