Valley Cooling Centers: Find Relief from the Heat
You or those you know may be sensitive to heat and this hot, hot weather is too much. The city of Fresno provides cooling centers to provide relief. This is especially important for the elderly in the valley.
Fresno.gov posted this a couple days ago,
"The forecast of high heat over the next few days has triggered activation of City of Fresno Cooling Centers today and tomorrow. Residents may visit Mosqueda Community Center, Pinedale Community Center, Ted C. Wills Community Center and the Frank H. Ball Neighborhood Center for heat relief from noon until 8pm. The City will provide free bus transportation along normal routes to and from the cooling centers for residents requesting a ride. While activation does call for free swimming while pools are operational, the City of Fresno pools closed for the season when FUSD began its 2010-2011 school year."
You can call the city on days under 105 degrees to check if the cooling centers are running. 621-CITY
For those who simply can't afford to pay their skyrocketing PG&E bills. The Fresno EOC program provides Home Energy Assistance/Emergency Crisis Program for those who qualify to help them pay their PG&E bill. This assistance is up to $390. It takes 10-14 days to know if you are approved at 6-8 weeks before they pay for your bill directly to PG&E. So, apply early if you foresee not being able to pay your bill in the future. If you do have a 48 hour notice, they should be able to help more quickly. For more information click HERE or call 559-263-1135.

Zulily.com, Daily Deals for Moms,Babies and Kids.
Sorry if I'm on a kick, but here is another short sale/deep discount site. However, like Swirl the discounts are great for the products you are buying, but not the most affordable clothing if you don't have the money right now. Unlike Swirl this site offers a variety of products including maternity, toys, furniture, etc. it just depends on the day.
Shipping with Zulily is flat rate $5.95.
She Saved has posted a couple coupon codes, BTSBLOG10 will get you $10 off a $30 order and Coupongeek found GAF7856 which takes $5 off an order of $50.
Don't forget to refer your friends once you sign up. You'll receive a $10 credit when they make their first order.
Thanks She Saved.

Kiss Country and Best Buy: Apple a Day Giveaway!
Today the Apple a Day Giveaway is an Apple IPad. Kiss Country and Best Buy have teamed up as part of a Back to School promotion. To enter, all you need to do is become a Kiss Country VIP member. This is nice because then you enter your information when you sign up, then click "register" at the bottom of the page for each contest. You don't have to retype everything again and again. So for the heck of it, I registered for all the concert ticket giveaways as well. Everything is local so if you win, you might as well go! Click HERE to see the contests and click HERE to register as a VIP member. My sister Jen used to always call in and win. I've never even gotten through! Although, I'm always driving when I listen to the radio so that would be illegal to even try now wouldn't it.

Amazon Deal Still On!
So I just have to mention this again. If you don't already have an Amazon account-get one. You can use the Subscribe and Save feature for items other than diapers and such, they just happen to be the best deal right now.
You can repeatedly sign up for the Subscribe and Save feature with Free two day shipping and cancel at any time without repercussions. I am expecting a new baby any day now so I took the time to order size N, 1-2, and 2 diapers. I also bought Lasinoh disposable breastpads. I'm going bulk, because the 30% off with Subscribe and Save for diapers and wipes becomes 15% off like all the other Subscribe and Save items after 8/31/2010.
Some tips:
Use the "Check out Your Coupons" feature once you've selected an item it will be further down the page. I used a Pampers coupon (once) for an extra 1.50 off in addition to the 30%
The Subscribe and Save discount applies to Amazon sales only.
Type in Subscribe and Save in the search bar if you don't see it at the top.
Amazon will show you different styles like Swaddlers or Baby Dry and there is a bar that says, More options available. Sometimes the sizes in the drop down are cheaper than the size shown. For instance: I was looking at the size 3 Pampers Baby Dry Pack for 27 cents a diaper, pulled out the more options, found that the size 1-2 pack was selling for 17 cents a diaper. After the 30% off, my diapers cost 11 cents a diaper.
If you receive Parents magazine, August offers an Amazon coupon for 20% off one order of Diapers. The codes are unique, but stack with Subscribe and Save.
My total for the size 1-2 Pampers diapers 192 count with the Subscribe and Save and Amazon coupon for diapers from Parents magazine was a total of $16.27 which is 9 cents a diaper!
Amazon also applied a Free Amazon Prime Membership preview to my account through November 3rd. So, if you're lucky, they'll do this for you to! This means I get free 2 day shipping and returns.
Don't forget with Swagbucks you could be earning $5 Amazon gift cards to go with your 15% off with Subscribe and Save after the August extra 15% off on diaper care items ends.

A Season of Yardsales
This post is dedicated to my sister Jen.
Summer is the season of yardsales. This is the community's opportunity to interact in a positive way and recycle/upcycle items. By participating in yardsales you save money, help others get rid of unwanted goods, and prevent waste (and lessen the impact on our landfills).
What are best items to get at yardsales? That's a matter of opinion. At this point in my life, clothing is my favorite. My mom, furniture probably. My sister loves getting books and large backyard toys for her kids. Furniture, electronics, antiques... it's up to you. Generally speaking yardsale prices are 10% of the original price. Obviously some items hold their value better than others and clothes are considerably less than 10%.
Now you might be thinking, I don't want to drive about aimlessly hoping I find a estate or yardsale with what I want.
You don't have to. Craigslist offers a garage sale section. You can read posts and plot your Saturday morning according to times, distance, and goods available. My sister went so far to plot each address on Google maps, planned her route, and printed it out. I generally pick a street, like Cedar, and drive north. It's up to you.
Since this weekend is the last before school starts, it's bound to be promising, so happy hunting!

Shade Clothing Liquidation up to 75% off
It is always a sad day to see a favorite store close. Shade clothing, a clothing line made specifically for modest and stylish wear announced today that it will be liquidating its entire stock of clothing. Products will be up to 75% off. Currently the website is down, I assume for maintenance reasons. Their shirts are especially wonderful because they tend to be extra long making all the bending over and sitting on the ground that mommies do much more comfortable because we aren't exposing our skin. Hopefully they will reemerge sometime soon, they have quality products.

A couple years ago, Sammy and I decided we weren't going to the fair so we didn't participate and we're kicking ourselves later because we went anyway and missed out on this great deal. Just make sure you have plenty of room on your camera's file for photos and a charged battery!
First place prizes with $75 cash, a $75 gift certificate to Fotech, and a first place ribbon. Second prizes win $50 in cash. Third prizes earn $25.
Even if you no you're not really interested in the competition, you can always take a picture of the kids or the family to get mounted and you still got a great deal!!! You can pick up your submission at Fotech after the fair closes.
To participate, pick up an entry form on Fresno and Shaw in the Mission Village shopping center and mail it with a $15 check written to Fotech by September 29th 2010. Address the envelope to:

Amazon.com
So I feel like a late-comer to the wonderfulness of Amazon.com. I would say Amazon is what Ebay used to be. Also with the combination of Swagbucks.com you can earn through your internet search bar Swagbucks to buy Amazon gift cards at $5 a piece. These gift cards include shipping costs, do not expire, and stack. Granted it takes a while to earn 450 Swagbucks, but over time it's free credit for something you are already doing, searching the internet. Swagbucks offers other prizes and gift cards, but the Amazon gift cards are truly the best deal.
You might be asking, "What's with the potty?" I used a $5 gift card from Swagbucks to discount my purchase to Amazon.com for this potty chair for my daughter. I purchased it along with some qualifying panties in order to get the super-saver shipping for purchases over $25. Had I been patient I could have saved the $25 in Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks and purchased it for FREE. Sadly I didn't have the foresight and had already purchased two Baby Einstein videos for FREE with $10 worth of gift cards. Well I spent $4.05 including shipping for and $4.88 for including shipping. The remaining balance just sat in my Amazon account for later.
Check out the Subscribe and Save for ways to seriously save on many necessities that you can have delivered right to your door. I think this is Amazon's ways of competing with Alice.com, Diapers.com and Soap.com
Groupon.com
So, I'm sure you've seen the ad for Groupon on nearly every couponing/frugal living blog you've encountered. I was a little suspicious to tell you the truth, but since the majority of the deals are from local companies, I decided to give it a try and it worked! We bought three tickets to The Island Waterpark at half price ($13). They did have an expiration date, but it was at the end of the season (September) and all I had to do is print it out and bring the coupon to the company just like any other coupon. So I just wanted to inject some confidence into those of you that are wary when the deals seem too good to be true. If you aren't familiar with Groupon you create an account and the email you daily deals that last 24 hours. These deep discounts are available because they work as "group" sales and create customer acquisition for businesses. When you see an offer you want, you sign into your account and make your purchase within the 24 hours and if enough people join, you're set! They currently offer referral rewards, $10 credit a friend, if you like what you see, you can use my referral HERE

SideStep Best for Cheap Flights
Have you checked out SideStep? I don't travel often, but in the last ten years this is the best site I have found for finding the best price and times for flights. It also offers searches for car rentals, hotels etc. The reason I find this group search site more valuable than others, is because it shows you a chart of the flight prices over the last 90 days -and- it shows you the best prices that other people have found in the last 48 hours on a calendar or list view. So happy traveling!

Free Family Movies in Fresno
Regal Entertainment is offering free movies this summer for kids and parents. The movies are G-PG, and start on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am. Fresno's Edward's Theater is participating only with Manchester Stadium as well. To check each week online to see what is playing click HERE. This next week at Edward's and Manchester you can watch Clifford's Big Movie (G) or The Spy Next Door (PG).
I see this as a great opportunity, not only to enjoy the movies with the fam, but to test out your little ones attention span knowing that you can walk out in the middle of the movie if you need to without any buyers regret.
Fresno Parks and Recreation offers free movies in the park all summer. Every Friday night they show a free family film in Easton Plaza. Parking around the Eaton Plaza and Water Tower is free for the event. They provide a free bounce house to entertain the kids before the show starts. Food vendors are present for the event. Click HERE for more details.
Tonight Blind Side is playing, next week August 20th, 2010, GI Joe. Movies run through September 24th, 2010.

Free Water Play areas in Fresno
Fresno has two free water play parks in Fresno that are mainly for ages 2-8 years old. One is well known and located in Roeding Park, the other is located on Maple and Shepherd and has two jungle gym areas, one for ages 2-5 the other 5-10 I believe. I have also known parents to take their little ones to play in the fountain that squirts up from the ground in front of the main entrance of Fashion Fair mall. So, if you were looking for a way for your kiddos to cool off, without your sprinklers or a pool, check these places out.
